Horizon Investment Portfolio Analyst is an Investment Portfolio Manager for Windows. It calculates profit, periodic total return, cumulative total return, average annual total return, internal rate of return (IRR), capital gain, buy/sell prices, and other statistics. Creates many different types of charts. Creates 5 different types of basis worksheets for capital gains calculations. Imports/exports data to/from many other applications. Especially useful for investments with multiple cash flows, such as mutual funds, 401k plans, annuities, and partnerships, but is also helpful for bank and savings accounts, CD's, stocks, bonds, etc. Virtually all the most important information needed to make investment decisions, is presented on one easy to read screen. Dates, currencies, and other numbers are displayed as specified in the user's regional settings in Control Panel.
Horizon Investment Analyst was originally written as an MS-DOS program in the early 90's, as The Variable Investment Analyst, currently at version 6.00, and available here. Click here for a screen shot. It was eventually rewritten from the ground up for 32 bit Windows based systems, under it's current name.
News (11/04/06):Version 6.47 is now available.
Below are some recent enhancements. Make sure to also check out the What's New page for more details.
News (08/03/03):Version 6.40 adds OLE drag/drop capability. Now, you can drag and drop files to Horizon Investment Analyst from Price Watch, Explorer, and other OLE enabled programs. This makes creating and organizing portfolios and importing files much easier. Several enhancements to the 'Open Investment Files' dialog were also added.
News (07/08/03):Version 6.37 changes the List option 'List all investments, and print a consolidated IRR for the entire portfolio' to also print the total value of the portfolio, and other aggregate statistics. 6.37 also includes several other new features and enhancements to Print Preview & Charting.
News (06/14/03):Version 6.35 fixes a bug that caused the screen to be repainted incorrectly when you hit escape to exit edit mode. It also fixes a bug in Print Preview that caused the screen to be repainted incorrectly if you changed the screen colors, then minimized the window, and then ran another Print Preview.
News (05/05/03):Version 6.30 adds a command line option '/W nn' which can be added to the end of the command string to tell Horizon Investment Analyst to (W)ait a specific amount of time for Windows resources to become available when the program is run. This solves the problem which occured on a few systems, of the program occasionally stalling when it is set up to automatically run at Windows startup.
News (12/10/02):Version 6.26 changes the Printer properties button on most dialogs to a Page Setup button, allowing you to change orientation, page margins, and even the printer at print time, if desired. Printing has never been easier! Click here for an image.
News (11/28/02):Version 6.24 adds comprehensive Save/Restore functions, including the ability to save (backup) the currently opened file, and to restore the data if you make a mistake and want to return the data to what it was before you started. You can also choose to let Horizon Investment Analyst automatically save your data each time a file is opened, and/or at regular 1 to 99 minute intervals.
6.24 also adds the ability to copy data from a cell and then paste it to one or more cells, adding to the block functions first introduced in 6.23 that allow clearing a range of cells and deleting a range of rows, rather than just one at a time. 6.24 adds several other really nice enhancements, so make sure you check out the What's New page for more details.
News (10/27/02): Version 6.21 fixes the problem where some records were being flagged on the grid and in printouts as having arithmetic errors, that didn't have any errors, and the problem that prevented being able to print Basis Worksheets to disk file. Several enhancements were also added.
News (07/03/02): Version 6.19 adds a new wide format report option, which takes advantage of printers that support printing in landscape mode (most printers do). This allows the addition of 3 new columns, 'Shares this transaction', 'Record Type', and 'Error', allows more fonts and font sizes to be used, and gives more space to all the columns, making reports easier to read. 6.19 also allows you to adjust the left and right margins to your preference.
Also, another test was added in 6.19, when displaying or listing the investment. Previously, a record was flagged as incomplete or ambiguous if the date was incorrect, or the program couldn't determine it's record type. The new test also verifies whether the arithmetic for sales is correct (since sales are the only transaction type that requires that all 3 numeric fields be input). For these, a record will be flagged if the '# of shares bought or sold' multiplied by 'share price' doesn't equal the amount entered for the transaction. Also, these errors are now flagged in listings to the printer and disk file.
News (06/15/02): Version 6.18 adds more enhancements to the Print Preview and Print Options screens (see below) which were introduced in 6.16 and 6.17. These 2 new screens now give you total control over the layout and appearance of your reports. You can select font, font size, font emphasis, lines per page, page orientation and margins, and all your printer's properties. You can then send the report to Print Preview to examine, before sending to your printer.
New for version 6.18 are additional Printer/page setup options to specify the # of blank lines to skip at the top of each page, user-specified printer initialization and reset control codes, the ability to share data files more easily with The Variable Investment Analyst, code that automatically updates the screen and grid when the system date changes, and other enhancements.
News (05/27/02): Version 6.17 adds new options to customize the layout and appearance of the data grid, including font, font size, font emphasis, and the colors of all the different parts of the grid. To further customize the data grid, you can also now optionally move the RT (record types) column from the far right column to the far left. You can also change the data grid's row height and column widths.
Also new in 6.17 are options to allow you to save imported file layout definitions so they can be easily retrieved and re-used between sessions, and an option to require the program to ask for confirmation before clearing cells and deleting rows.
News (05/01/02): Version 6.16 adds a dialog to the Rebuild function so you can rebuild any data file, not just the file that's currently open.
News (04/28/02): Whew! Many, many hours of work over the last few months have gone into version 6.16, which will help make it the standard by which other programs of this type will be judged. Many, many thanks to those who have paid the registration fee and become registered users. It's thanks to you that this program has kept getting better and better, and is now entering it's 12th year! To those who haven't paid what I think is a very modest registration fee of $15 yet, but could afford less, consider the $15 amount as a suggested figure, and feel free to send what you can afford. We will also accept more than $15, of course.
Upon payment, a unique registration code will be emailed to you that will remove the registration reminders, and give you all the other benefits of registration. Click here for the Registration page.
04/20/02: I'm considering creating a page with a roster of all the registered users. I'll probably just list initials, state or province and country, but if any of you will allow me to list your first, last names, and/or city, let me know.
