8/18/2008 These are some of the main articles responding to the Flanagan report referenced yesterday: Here here here here here here here One major criticism was voiced by Bruce Ridge, chairman of ICSOM:
"But still, no matter how deeply our industry is committed to publicizing its impending death, orchestras somehow manage to survive. In fact, in many places, they are thriving. This is due to the leadership of creative managers and active boards who are able to effectively demonstrate the relevance of the arts in their communities. It is a relatively simple formula: people will invest in things that serve the citizenry, and they won't invest in things that they are repeatedly told are unsustainable."
...
"We don't dispute that there is a need to analyze our field, but we believe that we are researching the wrong things. The "Elephant Task Force" acquired that sobriquet because it determined that there was a proverbial elephant in the room no one is discussing, that pachyderm being the economic situation of the symphony orchestra in America. We would suggest that the real elephant is still being ignored, even as it wrestles with the 800-pound gorilla and crushes the coffee table. We must learn to effectively market our orchestras, promoting them as vital, and branding them as indispensable. In a world where other businesses that offer far less to the common good have mastered the art of promotion and the utilization of free media, orchestras remain, by and large, dramatically behind the times. Where is the report that analyzes the great success stories? Why are we not studying the places where creative managers and musicians have led their orchestras to new heights of community service and artistic excellence? What other business uses the stories of its failures to build a model for the future? We have seen it all before. We are seeing it again now.
Bankruptcy used as a fund raising tool. Ridiculous.
An orchestra with half the musicians will be the panacea for a lack of endowment. Absurd.
Put that on a glossy brochure: The Columbus Symphony: To Cure You We Must Kill You."

OSU Assistant Professor of Violin Kia-Hui Tan took 3rd place in the New Tang Dynasty Television First Chinese International Violin Competition held July 24-27 2008 in New York City. "It was a great experience to interact with violinists of Chinese descent from around the world. I only heard about the competition two weeks prior, sent in my application (with CD) and received confirmation of acceptance one week prior. It was all very impromptu to have such a short time to practice the competition repertoire (Mozart/ Bach/ Paganini/ Wieniawski) but I wanted to prove to myself that I really could pull it off should the opportunity comes (e.g. to step in as concerto soloist at the last minute when somebody cancels), it's something I have prepared for all my life."  Video with interview on youtube

The Reiziger Trio (Eric Gratz, violin; Stephanie Price, viola; Nate West, cello) from The Chamber Music Connection made the semi-finals at the Fischoff National Chamber Music competition. Debbie reports:

Fischoff went well, the trio advanced to the semi's which was awesome! Of course, they wish they had made it into the finals, but only three ensembles (in this case three string quartets) make it to the finals/medal round out of the original 24.

In any case, they played great and received many accolades from the judges, audience, Fischoff staff and students.  The judges told them they placed very high (4 or 5 out of 24) but what hurt them was the trio medium -- several said it was like apples and oranges - the trio repertoire just can't compare to the repertoire available to a string quartet.  There were 10 judges, and several of them indicated that the trio performed with the most maturity and artistry of the entire field. They were told they displayed "stunning artistry" and "mature presence" on stage. After hearing that, it's a little hard to swallow not advancing to the medal round, but the judges kept reiterating it had everything to do with the nature of the instrumentation of the ensemble  - violin, viola, bass as compared to the string quartet.

Congratulations! (5/12/2008)  Photos
