Greensburg Christian Church

One of the historic churches of this community, the Greensburg Christian Church was organized on Sept. 29, 1832.

For four years after founding of the church, services were held in the courthouse. Later, the congregation met at the log home of Hugh Sidwell on East Main St.

In 1840 the congregation erected a building on South Broadway and Railroad streets.

The present Gothic-type church building was dedicated on Feb. 20, 1870. One of the noted ministers of the church was the Rev. Daniel R. Van Buskirk, who served three pastorates.

Greensburg Presbyterian Church

Founded on May 20, 1826, the Greensburg Presbyterian has been located on the northeast corner of the square since 1845.

Some of the earliest settlers of this community were members of the congregation, and a long list of prominent clergymen has served the congregation.

Initial meetings were held at homes of members until the members built their church in 1833. This was the first church building in Greensburg.

The original church at the present site faced the south. It was torn down in 1876 after the building had been damaged badly by fire.

The lower room of the present church was occupied on March 30, 1878. The church building was dedicated on June 5, 1881.

The building was damaged by wind in 1907, necessitating repairs which were completed in 1909. Throughout the years the congregation has made numerous improvements both to the church interior and exterior.

St. Mary's Catholic Church

Greensburg Catholics constructed their first church about the time this city incorporated in 1859.

Visiting priests had conducted services for Catholics here in the 1830s.

A small brick structure, the first building was constructed under the supervision of the Rev. Edward Martinovic. The Rev. John P. Gillig was the first resident pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church here.

The present spacious church was dedicated on June 17, 1885, and thereafter numerous improvements were made.

Among the fondly remembered priests is Rev. P. J. Schneider, who served St. Mary's parish for 23 years.
