Secrets of Better Photography Lesson 8
Camera used: Canon 40D

I went to the Indy Zoo saturday with my new camera. This little fellow just seemed to know how to pose for me.
The wood seems to frame the picture for me.
This shot was at 1/160 sec f / 6.3 with ISO 400 it was shot at 100 mm through the glass at an angle to get rid of the glare.

I thought this pair of Quails looked like love birds. I think this fits in ROT with his head.
They were perched high on the rocks but the zoom lens brought them in close.
I used a monopod since tripods were frowned upon in places like this.
This was shot at 1/250 sec at f / 5.6 ISO was set at 800 using a 400 mm lens.

This lioness was up on a rock in her enclosure. By this time I was shaking from the 35 degree cold but it was worth it.
I used a monopod to steady the shaking lens. I think the lines in the trees add to this view.
This was shot at 1/400 sec at f / 7.1 ISO was set at 500 using a 400 mm lens.

Secrets of Better Photography Lesson 5
Camera used: Canon S5 IS

For this shot I used a monopod with low side lighting coming through windows.
A reflector might have helped this shot but I still liked the effect I got.
The camera was set on f-4 I didn't want to stop down too much because I wanted all the blooms in focus.
The speed was1/500sec, ISO 80 and zoomed in to 72mm.
My eye is drawn to the bright bloom in the upper right. I think it works in the ROT
I figured out what I did wrong before in the aperture priority mode. When the shutter speed flashes red I went too far.
.

I hand held this shot at f-8 to get greater depth of field the camera set the film speed to ISO 80 and shutter speed to 1/1600 sec.
I think with the sun as my subject in ROT and the silhouette of the trees it frames the photo.

I tried this photo with two different settings of the same subject. I hope it's OK to show you both.
It was late afternoon & the sun wasn't on the water rushing over the rocks where I needed it.
The shot on the left was at f-4 with 1/250 sec ISO 80. The shot on the right was at f-5.6 with 1/500 sec with ISO 400.
I think the color of the sky and the sharpness came out better on the left photo with the lower ISO. Both were hand held.

Secrets of Better Photography Lesson 4
Camera used: Canon S5 IS
This shot was hand held with low side lighting coming through the trees with the feeder framing it on the left.
The camera was set on sports mode to stop action using the 12X optical zoom.
I tried to crop using the feeder
with the bird as the subject in ROT.
This shot was in automatic mode with a bright overcast day that backlit the frost on the needles.
I liked the repetition in the
needles against the soft dark background. I hand held this shot too.
This shot is from inside a covered bridge hand held at 1/30 sec. ISO at 400.
I liked the wood arches and beams leading to the bright opening at the other end.
All the interior light came from the low side lighting coming in the windows.

Secrets of Better Photography Lesson 3
Camera used: Canon S5 IS
I was interested in the lines in this flower. The lines flow in many different directions.
I used the Macro setting and a tripod to get this available light shot.
Taken at the Indianapolis Zoo's Botanical Garden.
This shot was hand held 1/500 second using available light.
Taken at the Indianapolis Zoo's
Botanical Garden.
I tried to use the rule of thirds with the dark orchid as the subject.
This shot was hand held auto setting using available light.
Taken at the Indianapolis Zoo's
Botanical Garden.
This is the same photo before I cropped it to make the purple orchid the main subject.
I liked it better this way but tried to crop it to fit the rule of thirds.
