Leonard grew up in Benton Harbor. He had various jobs after high school including helping his brothers run a restaurant and working in a butcher shop. He met Marion in the fall of 1947. During the springtime he moved to Milwaukee to find work closer to Marion and worked as a window decorator at Schuster's. At this time he had thoughts of a career in illustrating or advertising, but as the summer went on, he felt more and more led to the ministry.
He was accepted at Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Illinois. At Christmas time in 1948 he proposed to Marion. They were married in June. He was ordained in September, 1953 in Kenton, Ohio. He later served in Tawas City, MI; Hemlock, MI; and Sanford, MI. He retired from the ministry on May 21, 1989 having served as a pastor for 36 years.

& Marion moved to a log house in May, 1989. He built the
