fought in the Spanish American War. He died in West Allis,
Wisconsin at 84th Street at a railroad track. He was hit by a
train on a foggy night as he was walking home from work as a
foundry foreman. He is buried at Wauwatosa Cemetery. He was five
foot, four inches tall and had red hair and grey eyes.

Friedrich was a highly honored veteran who served in the German
and American armies. He began his career in the German army at
the age of 22 and served for six years. He served in the U.S.
Army as Captain from 1861 to 1865. He was united in marriage with
Mary Holtz at the age of 29.
In the spring of 1858 Mr. Barnekow and his family
consisting of his wife, two sons and one daughter came to
America. His journey to America both on the ocean and cross
country was very hard and trying. They arrived in Milwaukee in
June of 1858. They lived in Milwaukee only one year, and their
home was near the pumping station on the shores of Lake Michigan.
The following year he and his family moved to Wauwatosa and
worked the farms of Mr. B Gilbert and also Joseph A. Warren.

George's father died when he was seven. When he was 9 he went to
live with his Aunt Nelly (Murphy). He stayed there until he was
13. The Murphy family was Catholic but he stood outside the
church rather than go in when sent to worship with the children.
He went to 4th grade at Lincoln school in W.A. George also stayed
with his Uncle Fred at the Blatz farm. He enlisted in the Marines
on December 15, 1920. He was confirmed September 23, 1925. He
worked as a foundry shipping foreman at the time of his
retirement.
George married Annitha and they had two children. They lived
upstairs in Annitha's mother's home on Highland Avenue. George
worked at Rosenthals from Feb. 2, 1923 until during the
depression he was laid off and worked for American Express Co.
for 2 to 3 years and other places until April 1934. He moved to
98th street in 1934 for a short time, then to Greenfield Avenue
in fall of 1934. The rent was $18. per month. The house had a
shallow pond in the yard where the children played.
Annitha died in 1937, during one of the worst years of the depression. George and the children lived with Annitha's mother for a short time during Annitha's illness and after her death.
On June
23, 1938 George married Martha at Merrill, Wisconsin in St. Paul
Lutheran (Pine River) with Rev. Roland Lemke officiating. They
rented a home at 1503 S. 100 Street which they later purchased.
George was blond, 5 foot, 10 inches tall and weighed 180 pounds.
He died from cancer of the prostate gland which spread throughout
his body. He is buried next to Annitha at New Berlin, WI.

Steven worked as a sales manager for Carpenter Baking Co. in
Milwaukee. He also had a grocery store on Barnekow Avenue where
he lived with his family. Steven and Robert both changed their
names from Cox to Pierce while their brother, George, was in the
Marines. George was very displeased with this.

Robert Barnekow suffered a spinal cord injury in the spring of 1937 in a fall from a tree he was trimming. He was in the same hospital as Annitha, at the time of her death. He lived for many years after this injury.

Mortensen - married to Nora and has daughter, Betty Mihalek and
son Royce. Royce died from brain tumor. She came to U.S. in 1881.
During the depression (about 1933) George Cox drove the family,
including his mother-in-law, "Marie" Thiede, and his
wife Annitha, out to Kansas City to visit Pete Markesen and his
wife, Sarah. Peter was Grandma Thiede's older half-brother; he
had the same mother, but a different father. Raymond and Marion
Cox also came along and perhaps Annitha's brothers, Fredrich and
Dellmar.

Christian came with is wife from Denmark. He was killed in 1927 by a hit and run driver in a Ford as he walked home from work at Allis Chalmers. He lived with his daughter, Tina, after his wife died in 1920. They lived in Hartland on a hill by a cemetery. He is buried there.

surgery. Fred visited Marion and Leonard Newman in Sanford, MI at

was born at home. She attended eight grades at Ludington Public
School. She worked for Steve's and Coplan, a furrier, doing
housework. She was confirmed on September 23, 1925 at Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church with George Cox and his brother, Steven.
In 1937 she entered the Milwaukee County Hospital where she died
on April 24, 1937 from complications of childbirth. She was ill
for seven weeks. Rev. Luther Voss officiated at her funeral. She
is buried at Highland Memorial Cemetery, New Berlin, WI.

came from Germany with his brother, John, to New York and they
parted. The wicker chest which Marion (Cox) Newman has was his
from Germany. He worked for Hawke's nursery. He was treated for
the flu and died of a ruptured ulcer. He is buried in Wauwatosa
Cemetery. His wife gave birth to their last child after his death
and named the child after hime. As of 1989, Frederick Jr. was the
sole survivor of this family.

was baptized on November 10, 1903. When she was six her family
moved to Lincoln County, WI. She attended eight grades of public
school. She was confirmed March 24, 1918 by Rev. Kirchhafer. She
went to Milwaukee in 1924 and did housework. She worked as an aid
at the T.B. Sanitarium until 1938 when she was married. Martha
and George raised five children; Marion and Raymond from George's
first wife, and Michael, Grace, and Marjorie from their union.
She lived in the family house until 1989. In 1993 she moved to a
retirement apartment. She is buried next to George at New Berlin,
WI.

Marion attended Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and school. She graduated from eighth grade in 1942 and was confirmed on May 24th of the same year. She attended Lutheran High School in Milwaukee from 1942 to 1946. Marion attended Dr. Martin Luther College at New Ulm, MN. During the fall of 1947 she was sent to St. Matthew Church in Benton Harbor, MI to teach. Due to the severe shortage of teachers in the church at this time many, like Marion, were placed before completing four years of college.
Marion taught kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades in the church basement. She met Leonard during the fall of 1947. He proposed on Christmas Eve, 1948 and gave her a diamond ring. She gave him a portable typewriter which was much needed and used for many years.
Marion
and Leonard's first child was born in 1950. Five more would
follow, the fourth and fifth being twins. Marion returned to
teaching about 1973 and taught kindergarten at St. John Lutheran
School in Midland, MI for 13 years. She is currently involved in
many social and church activities including Pregnancy Aid, People
to People, Ladies Aid, Altar Guild, and family values work.
