About the Friends of the Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail

The Friends of the Clinton—Ionia—Shiawassee (CIS) Trail was formed by an initiative of the Clinton Area Planning for Intergovernmental Teamwork (CAPIT) in the Spring of 1999 to research the possibility of turning the unused Central Michigan Railroad corridor into a recreational trail.

Originally known as the Friends of the Ionia to Owosso Trail, the name was soon changed to the Friends of the Clinton—Ionia—Shiawassee Trail to reflect the regional perspective of the proposed project, which runs between Ionia and Owosso and through the towns of Ovid, St. Johns, Fowler, Pewamo and Muir.

The Friends of the CIS Trail hope to gain the confidence of all the communities along the trail and help them find answers to their questions and concerns and also to understand the impact that this trail -- for non-motorized recreational activities such as bicycling, hiking, cross-country skiing and rollerblading -- will have on their community. We seek to form partnerships with all governments adjacent to the proposed trail in order to ensure that their voices are heard and that their concerns are addressed in the planning process.

Through this participatory process, the end product will be a well-designed and well-managed trail that residents will be proud to call their own.

Now....

...Future?

Our Mission:

To create a safe, multi-use trail for non-motorized recreation, utilizing the former Central Michigan Railroad corridor between Ionia and Owosso, Michigan.

Our Vision:

To establish a linear park in the Mid-Michigan area that will provide a safe, accessible, inexpensive and environmentally friendly recreation opportunity for non-motorized vehicles.

Purpose of the Friends of the Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail:

  1. To develop a plan for a recreational trail utilizing the former Central Michigan Railroad right-of-way which traverses Ionia, Clinton and Shiawassee counties, with future possibilities to include connections with other existing trails.
  2. To ensure that an implementing mechanism is established to acquire, develop, maintain and operate the trail.
  3. To build community support for the trail by informing residents of its many benefits. Community support is essential because the trail will be owned and operated as a community resource.
  4. To ensure a high degree of involvement and participation by the residents of Clinton, Ionia and Shiawassee counties and to support creation of an inter-local agreement among the governmental units in the affected communities that will ultimately own, operate, maintain and police the completed trail.
