Keep Doves Protected Update - October 27, 2006
Countdown: 11 Days until Election Day!
Dear friends of Mourning Doves,
EPIC/MRA just
completed a poll on Michigan ’s Proposal 3, and I have good news to share: We
are in the lead, and climbing. The latest numbers show just 25 percent support
the shooting of doves in Michigan while 65 percent of those surveyed say they
will vote NO on Proposal 3.
We have increased our lead by several points over the past couple weeks. It
shows that our TV and radio ads, door-to-door canvassing, and other grassroots
outreach are effectively reaching Michigan voters with our message to vote No on
Proposal 3 and say No to shooting doves.
While the news is very positive, this fight is not over yet. There are just 11
days left in this campaign, and our opposition will be on the air Monday with
their first radio ad.
These next few days will be the toughest yet, as the weather gets colder, and our opponents hit the airwaves with their misleading ads. Let’s not let them cut into our lead. Let’s keep up the canvassing, fundraising, phone calling, letters to the editor, and everything else to make sure the doves have a victory on November 7!
Thanks for all your great work. It is working. Campaigns our all about momentum... we just need to keep it up a few more days!
In this issue:
CANVASSING, PHONE BANKING AND ELECTION DAY VOLUNTEERS
CANVASSING
–
We still have a
good number of doors to knock on in Wayne , Oakland and Washtenaw counties, so
we really need all able-bodied volunteers to help us out with our final 2
weekends of this!
Canvassing is fun (really!), great exercise, and the absolute BEST way to
relieve anxieties about the outcome of this campaign! There are scheduled times
on Saturday and Sundays where you can meet up with your coordinator and others,
or you can pick up supplies anytime and strike out on your own. Either way (and
ideally), we’d like to have canvassers out every day for our doves from now
until Election Day ‘06!
PHONE BANKING –
We need help
making thousands of calls to Michigan voters reminding them to get out and vote
on November 7th. We need all the help we can get to ensure that we win and that
Michigan ’s 100 year ban on shooting doves is restored. You can volunteer at
phone banking centers in Lansing , Kalamazoo and Southfield OR make the calls
from your home. (NOTE: local calls cannot be guaranteed). Phone banking will
start Monday, Oct 30th and go to Monday, Nov 6th (no phone
banking on Halloween).
ELECTION DAY VOLUNTEERS
–
Finally, on
Election Day, we are looking for volunteers who are willing to stand outside of
polling locations to remind supporters that a NO vote on Prop 3 is a NO vote for
Shooting Doves! HOURS: 7:00-10:00am & 4:00-7:00pm. Polling data shows that if
people are confused, they might vote the wrong way even though they might fully
support our position. You can choose your own polling location (near you) or we
can pick a high traffic one for you! In some areas, we will have signs
available, but we will also need volunteers to make their own by printing out
our No on Prop 3 message here:
http://www.stopshootingdoves.org/files/DoveSign_Sm.pdf,
and then having
it enlarged at a copy center.

There’s NO GOOD REASON to Shoot Doves:
¨ They are NOT overpopulated
¨ They do NOT cause a threat to people or property
¨ They are shot for target practice, NOT food
¨ There are 40 other bird species in Michigan , and there’s NO reason to add our official Bird of Peace to the list
¨ Doves have been protected in Michigan for 100 years and there’s NO reason to change that now
