COLD WEATHER: Reporting Animal Cruelty Are you concerned about a dog or other companion animal being kept outside - and seemingly forgotten - without proper provisions such as ample food, unfrozen water and adequate shelter? In our service area of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park, the Michigan Humane Society Cruelty Investigation Department is busy checking out cold weather cruelty-related reports from compassionate people like you. The MHS recommends that companion animals live indoors all year long with the rest of their human families. However, if an animal must remain outside in the cold for any length of time, by state law his guardians must provide proper provisions. Learn about Michigan anti-cruelty laws and how to report animal cruelty. |

BEHAVIOR TIP: Who’s the Boss? By CJ Bentley, Pet Education Center Manager/Behavior Consultant There is nothing quite like the loyalty we receive from our companion animals. They love us and we love them right back. But the way we love them can greatly affect our overall relationship with them. Consider a person who believes that spoiling her dog giving him everything he wants when he wants it is a terrific way to show her love. In reality, this may lead to the dog rarely listening to her commands, demanding attention and generally being a challenge to live with. The best way to show your dog you love him is by being a fair and kind leader. Your dog will gain comfort and security in knowing what is expected of him where he fits in your family "pack." And providing a secure and comfortable home for your dog is one of the very best ways to say "I love you." EMPLOYEE MILESTONE: MHS Education Director Reaches 40th MHS Anniversary! Thousands of metro Detroit-area schoolchildren know him as the kind man who, with his assistant, chihuahua/poodle-mix Chip, teaches them about responsible care of and respect for companion animals as well as safety around animals. Michigan Humane Society Education Director, Ron Blauet, reached his 40th anniversary with MHS this month. |
In his current role over the
last 20 years, Ron has developed and continuously improved the MHS Humane
Education Program, now reaching more than 15,000 children at hundreds
of schools each year. He is also the voice of the Michigan Humane Society on
many local television and radio stations, promoting adoptions and educating
the community about important animal issues. You’ve likely heard or seen Ron
somewhere over the last few years … and we hope he’ll still be a part of the
Michigan Humane Society for many more to come.
Congratulations and thank you, Ron, for your dedication and achievements in creating a more humane world! Learn about the Michigan Humane Society’s Humane Education program. |
