The ASI is an independent research and educational organization that advances the status of animals in public policy and promotes the study of human-animal relationships. The ASI formed in mid-2005 as a result of the merger of the Institute for Animals and Society and the Society and Animals Forum. IAS was the former Animal Rights Network (publisher of The Animals' Agenda magazine) and SAF was originally called PSYETA, Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
