In response to Hurricane Rita, following closely behind the devastation of Katrina, the Michigan Humane Society again assembled a team of our professional animal care providers to help the many animal victims. The need was immediate - soon after Rita's path of destruction hit Texas, hundreds of rescue requests began to come in daily from animal guardians. |
The Michigan Humane
Society's 12-person Hurricane Rita animal rescue team departed on Monday,
September 26 in four vehicles packed with supplies and equipment for
Beaumont, Texas, about one hour east of Houston. Our
skilled team is helping rescue and care for animals in some of the hardest
hit areas. Click here to view the MHS animal rescue team journal The MHS team was put right to work in all phases of the relief effort. However, dogs, cats and other animals still need to be rescued, many are in need of medical care and hundreds need to be reunited with their guardians. As part of our continuing support efforts, on Sunday, October 2, the MHS airlifted 94 dogs and cats from a Houston-area shelter, bringing them to safety in Michigan. In addition to helping them find good homes, this will provide more space for newly rescued animals in Texas. The new arrivals will be evaluated and receive medical treatment as needed. Once this process is completed and the animals become available for adoption, we will provide additional information. With your help we will continue to make a difference! The Michigan Humane Society is accepting donations to support the efforts of our animal rescue team. How you can help: |
