Only share this info with known pet lovers and ask them to be discreet too as to
who they tell about this--the fewer who show up supporting pound seizure, the
better!
Please help!!
WE NEED BODIES to come to the county commission meeting this coming Tuesday,
Sept. 27, 2005 at 7pm in the Jackson County Tower Building, 120 W. Michigan Ave,
Jackson, MI (commission office no. is 517-788-4336). The agenda should be
published on the Jackson county website ahead of time and directions are on the
website too.
I will have red ribbons for people to wear to show unity to stop pound seizure.
Please dress very conservatively (like for church) and keep any speeches focused
on pet safety and welfare and how stopping p.s. helps a community and better to
not talk about any dealers or what happens to animals in research. Any
information you do talk about make certain that it is documented--in a
mainstream newspaper or magazine. Or you could talk about any personal
experience you have had with a pet getting loose even though you are a
responsible pet owner. Or if you have adopted a pet from a shelter how the pet
has become a family member, etc. Or how horrible it is to go through a dog bite
situation (stopping p.s. can cause a 56% reduction in dog bites). Our focus is
not about making this an animal rights issue or about stopping animal research
(NO PETA signs or tshirts please)--please check out our website for more info.
(also, they usually have 5 min. speeches allowed then later 3 minutes but last
year they shortened it to 2 min. at the last minute, so you may want to either
have a backup plan or keep it shorter)!
Because I complained to our commission
about especially women not giving out their home addresses in public, they have
changed that policy. YOU SHOULD NOT have to state your address, they may
request you state what county you are from. If they don't ask for it, it is not
necessary to volunteer it! (they will not be voting on p.s. at this meeting but
we need a strong showing).
Even more important--I spoke to Comm. Shotwell just now. There is also going to
be a Committee of The Whole Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 29 on the 6th floor of
the Jackson County Tower Building. We need to be there at 5:30 (it begins at
4pm). At 5:45 the topic will be the sale of shelter pets to Class B
dealers and if enough show they may move the meeting to the comm. chambers on
the 2nd floor. There will be no action taken at this meeting. The
commissioners have the right to ask questions of anyone at the meeting and he
believes there will also be public comment at the end. If you can come to this,
please let me know if you can (especially if you will arrive a little late). He
said the door may be locked downstairs and it would be illegal if we can't get
into the meeting so he gave me his cell phone number.
I asked if there was any chance for a full ban and he claims that a state law
forces us to sell pets to MSU. I will be checking into that later with my
attorney.
If you do nothing else, please go to my website, click on contact your
commissioners (whether you live in Jackson county or not) and send them a letter
(best), an email or call them please! Please help us fight for our pets!!

"Our goal is to educate the public on pet issues including pet safety and
spay/neuter, help our shelter pets and to stop pound seizure. "Pound seizure"
is the selling of lost and homeless pets from our county, tax funded animal
shelter (pound) to places where they will end up in research. This puts all our
pets at risk and is against the guidelines of the National Animal Control
Association. Stopping pound seizure DOES NOT STOP ANIMAL RESEARCH and helps a
community in many other ways including saving money, reducing dog bites which
will help to protect children, helps law enforcement and our farmers,
etc.--LEARN THE FACTS BEFORE YOU DECIDE!!
