All Species Kinship in Battle Creek, Michigan
was alerted by a resident of Grand Rapids, MI that radio station WKLQ, Grand
Rapids, was advertising that they would be drowning a shelter
dog (slated for euthanasia) on Friday, Aug. 12 at 8 am at an
undisclosed location to raise awareness about child drownings.
We have contacted the GR police dept. who had contacted the station and was
informed that this was done as a "hoax" to
ascertain reaction to recent child drownings. This is an unacceptable
approach to take-animal abuse is not funny and drowning animals is
illegal.
AR group, Uniting For Justice will be requesting on-air and on-line
apologies and a statement about how inappropriate this was. If they
do not comply, we will be informing them that a multi-organization
phone campaign will be started, directed to their station advertisers to
advise of this disgustingly inappropriate behavior and the fact that we will
be calling for a boycott of their products if they do not pull
their station advertising.
We would like the support of as many AR organizations on this as possible.
Obviously there is strength and influence in numbers. We will have a much
broader impact if many organizations band together to show WKLQ and Clear
Channel that we are serious about exposing their support of animal cruelty
and abuse by allowing this atrocity to be published on their website and
broadcast on air.
We are now asking that you still send letters via email or call (call to
add to all of the other messages they are getting tonight..it would be nice
to get the voicemail box FULL) the station directly as an offended listener
and explain how inappropriate this is and that it leads to an even bigger
problem of promoting violence and that violence and abuse toward animals is
directly linked to domestic violence and child abuse.
