 Concours d'Elegance at Cranbrook

The Michigan Humane Society is fortunate to be a charity recipient of the proceeds of the 2005 Concours d’Elegance at Cranbrook.  This event financially supports local charitable organizations by producing classic automobile events that showcase the heritage and artistic significance of the automobile in the beautiful surroundings of the campus of the Cranbrook Educational Community. Purchase your tickets to this world-class exposition being held Sunday, July 24 directly from the MHS and 100% of the proceeds will go to benefit the animals.  Tickets are $25.

Limited tickets are also available to the “AutoMotion in the Art Museum” event on Friday, July 22 in the Cranbrook Art Museum Theater.  The movie will be “Grand Prix” starring James Garner, chosen by a media jury as a genre classic sure to entertain and remind you of “when movies were movies.”  Moviegoers will relive the “good old days” while enjoying popcorn and champagne.  Tickets are $100.

Tickets to the Starlight d’Elegance Gala on Saturday, July 23 are also still available at $250 per person.  Held at the GM Heritage Center in Sterling Heights, this exclusive event will include a lavish strolling buffet supper and live and silent auction all amongst one of the most incredible private car collections in the world.

Please contact Tricia Brosnahan at (248) 799-7400 x126 or tbrosnahan@michiganhumane.org to reserve your tickets for any of these events!

Pet Apprentice Contest

Does your pet have what it takes to make his “mark” in the business world?  Enter your dog or cat in the Michigan Humane Society’s Pet Apprentice Contest, sponsored by Pet Supplies “Plus.”  A dog and cat Pet Apprentice, selected from all entries, will be “hired” as “paid” Pet Supplies “Plus” consultants for one year.  Prizes include Pet Supplies “Plus” gift certificates and having your pet’s photo included in a Pet Supplies “Plus” advertisement!  Second and third place prizes will also be awarded.  And, no one will hear the words, “You’re fired!” in this friendly competition.

Entries must be received at the Michigan Humane Society by Monday, August 15.  Finalists will be invited to the MHS’ Animal Care Fair on Saturday, August 27 at noon, but need not be present to win.  Click here for contest details.

Hot Weather Safety Reminders

Hot summer weather can prove dangerous for companion animals.  To help keep them safe, the Michigan Humane Society offers some basic precautions.

A dog or cat’s normal body temperature is between 101 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit.  When they become overheated, such as during too-strenuous exercise or while in a parked car, their body temperature increases rapidly.  Once it reaches a critical point, irreparable brain damage or death can occur.

Even in milder warm weather, leaving an animal in a parked car for a short time could prove dangerous. It’s often much kinder to leave animals at home where they can remain safe and comfortable.

If you see an animal left alone in a parked car or outdoors without shade and water, please contact your local police or animal control immediately.  In the cities of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park, call the Michigan Humane Society Cruelty Hotline at (313) 872-3401.
