Officials in the Canadian government acknowledge that the
only way the annual slaughter of more than 330,000 seals off the Atlantic
coast will be abolished is if the Canadian fishing industry asks the
government to do so. Hence, opponents of the slaughter have initiated an
international boycott of Canadian seafood which is intended to apply enough
economic pressure to leave the industry no choice but to beg for an end to the
slaughter.
Individual consumers and numerous corporations, including Legal Seafoods and
Whole Foods, have pledged not to purchase seafood at least from the Atlantic
coast of Canada. However, restaurant chain Red Lobster, the largest U.S.
importer of seafood from Canada, has stubbornly refused to participate in the
boycott.
In an effort to encourage Red Lobster to sign on, the HSUS is coordinating
demonstrations to be held at Red Lobster locations throughout the U.S. and
Canada on Saturday, June 25.
In solidarity, opponents ! of the brutal slaughter in Michigan will gather at
the Red Lobster restaurant in Novi located at 27760 Novi Rd. (in front of the
Twelve Oaks Mall) on Saturday, June 25th from noon to 2:00pm. The ramp from
I-96 to Novi Rd. is closed for construction, but the detour is M-5 to Twelve
Mile. Then go left on Novi Rd. It will be clearly marked.
We know that June is a very busy month for most people, and lots of vacations
will be starting, but if you can spare a few hours that day, your
participation would be greatly appreciated, and your support in this effort is
crucial. Please pass this alert on to your networks and acquaintances. Signs
will be provided, but you are welcome to make your own if you so choose.
