SUPPORT THE SWEENEY-SPRATT AGRICULTURE APPROPRIATIONS AMENDMENT

Americans don’t eat horsemeat but our horses are being killed for European and Asian menus. This Wednesday, June 8, Representatives John Sweeney (R-NY) and John Spratt (D-SC) will offer an amendment on the agriculture appropriations bill to stop the funding of USDA inspections at horse slaughterhouses and at the border – preventing the slaughter of nearly 100,000 horses.

We must reach every single member of the U.S. House of Representatives and secure their vote for the Sweeney-Spratt Agriculture Appropriations Amendment. There is no other way to win this vote for horses!

The Facts:

·          Last year, more than 90,000 American horses were either slaughtered in one of three foreign-owned slaughterhouses in the U.S. or shipped to Canada or Mexico for slaughter. The numbers are increasing. Last week, 1,923 horses went to slaughter.

 

• Many companion horses are unknowingly sold to slaughter, and many others are stolen and sold for a profit. Killer buyers at auctions and slaughterhouse operators want people to believe that all of the horses they slaughter are old, sick and lame and have arrived there legally but the truth is, racehorses, show horses, riding ponies, wild horses, and even foals go to slaughter.
   
• Slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia.  Horses suffer horribly on the way to and during slaughter. It is not euthanasia at all. That term literally means “good death” or a gentle, painless death provided in order to prevent suffering. Slaughter of horses involves intense suffering, pain, and terror. Horses are shipped over long distances, with no food, water or rest, in trucks designed for livestock thus horses cannot hold their heads in a normal position. Undercover footage has shown that many horses are improperly stunned and are still conscious when they are shackled and hoisted by a rear leg to have their throats cut.
