Do trespassing hunters drive you crazy?

With each new hunting season it seems that hunters become less responsible and more invasive of other’s property.  Whether through ignorance or arrogance, some hunters routinely invade the land of others, damaging trees, killing animals and posing a risk to anyone merely taking a walk in their own field.  While Michigan law allows landowners to post no trespassing signs, and there are criminal penalties that are supposed to apply, there is little chance of enforcement.

There is a new bill in the Michigan Senate that adds another tool to help landowners stop trespassing hunters.  SB 499 would allow posting by painting purple paint on trees and fences.  This is a great idea since hunters routinely remove no hunting signs.  Please write your state senator and let him/her know you support this important legislation.  For more information visit www.jethrosplace.org/legislation1.htm.

Utah teacher dissects living dog in a high school class.

A Utah teacher actually dissected a living dog in a biology class to demonstrate how the digestive system works.  Outraged citizens have complained and there is a guarantee that the school will not allow anything like this to happen again.  Michigan law would allow a teacher to dissect a living animal, in fact it happens all the time to frogs.  While we hope that one day animal dissection will not be allowed in our schools, there is legislation in the Michigan House of Representatives that allows students to opt out of dissection projects for moral reasons.  Please take a minute and contact our Michigan Representative and let him/her know you support HB 4254.  Contact information can be found at www.jethrosplace.org/legislation1.htm

Alert from HSUS:

Stop Federal Funding of the Slaughter of Wild Horses

Support the Rahall-Whitfield Interior Appropriations Amendment

Dwindling Numbers

In the 1800’s, the Great Plains were home to more than two million wild horses and burros. In 1971, when the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Protection Act was passed, only 60,000 remained.  Sadly, continued roundups of “excess” wild horses have led to their population dwindling to less than 35,000.

Last year protection for wild horses and burros was overturned and once again the BLM is allowed to commercially sell wild horses.  As a direct result, 41 have been slaughtered for human consumption overseas.  Nearly 8,000 are currently slated for slaughter!

There Is Hope

This Thursday, May 19, Representatives Rahall (D-WV) and Whitfield

(R-KY) will introduce the Rahall-Whitfield Amendment to Interior Appropriations. This amendment will be offered for a recorded up-or-down floor vote and, if passed, will ensure that no tax dollars are used for sales of wild horses that could lead to their slaughter.

Americans will soon know which Members of Congress support and oppose wild horse slaughter.

It is so infrequent that we have this sort of opportunity - your involvement is really important.

We must reach every single member of the U.S. House of Representatives and secure their vote for the Rahall-Whitfield Interior Appropriations Amendment. This is the most critical time for saving our horses.

Your phone call could make all the difference…urge their support for the Rahall-Whitfield Appropriations Amendment to save wild horses from slaughter.

Use the Congressional Switchboard to find your US Representative: 202-224-3121 or go to    http://www.house.gov/

.

Sample Phone Script:
"My name is [your name] and I'm calling from [your city and state].  I'm calling to urge Representative [your Representative's name] to vote YES on Thursday's vote on the Rahall-Whitfield Interior Appropriations amendment to protect wild horses from sale and slaughter. I care very much about our wild horses and am horrified that 41 were recently sent to slaughter. Thank you."

Taking a road trip?

One of the easiest ways to help save pets is to become a transporter.  Many wonderful dogs and cats need to get from shelters in Northern Michigan to shelters and rescues in the more populated areas of the state.  If you are going to your cottage for the weekend and have room to bring back a furry friend or two for delivery to a rescue or shelter, please let us know.  Email info@jethrosplace.org

Have a wonderful week!
