Stop
Federal Funding of the Slaughter of Wild Horses
Support the Rahall-Whitfield Interior Appropriations Amendment
Dwindling Numbers
In the 1800’s, the Great Plains were home to more than two million wild horses and burros. In 1971, when the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Protection Act was passed, only 60,000 remained. Sadly, continued roundups of “excess” wild horses have led to their population dwindling to less than 35,000.
Last year protection for wild horses and burros was overturned and once again the BLM is allowed to commercially sell wild horses. As a direct result, 41 have been slaughtered for human consumption overseas. Nearly 8,000 are currently slated for slaughter!
There Is Hope
This Thursday, May 19, Representatives Rahall (D-WV) and Whitfield
(R-KY) will introduce the Rahall-Whitfield Amendment to Interior Appropriations. This amendment will be offered for a recorded up-or-down floor vote and, if passed, will ensure that no tax dollars are used for sales of wild horses that could lead to their slaughter.
Americans will soon know which Members of Congress support and oppose wild horse slaughter.
It is so infrequent that we have this sort of opportunity - your involvement is really important.
We must reach every single member of the U.S. House of Representatives and secure their vote for the Rahall-Whitfield Interior Appropriations Amendment. This is the most critical time for saving our horses.

calling to urge Representative [your Representative's name] to vote YES on
Thursday's vote on the Rahall-Whitfield Interior Appropriations amendment to
protect wild horses from sale and slaughter. I care very much about our wild
horses and am horrified that 41 were recently sent to slaughter. Thank you."
