I sent that last message
regarding the greyhounds out as soon as I got it. When I was finally able to
reach the shelter by phone they sent me this:
PLEASE READ... OUR SHELTER HAS BEEN RECEIVING THOUSANDS OF CALLS, EMAILS AND
FAXES ABOUT THE GREYHOUND TRACK CLOSING....PLEASE CROSSPOST.
Thank you for inquiring about helping the greyhounds affected by the
Plainfield, CT track closing! Most likely you emailed or called our shelter in
response to an email that you received.
The original email DID NOT come from our shelter...we simply forwarded it
from another organization to a couple rescue folks in our community.
Without our knowledge this email was edited and sent it on to other folks, who
without our knowledge edited it and sent it on to other folks, who...well,
it's just plain gone all across the country.
The following is coming from our local greyhound rescue:
it is true that the Plainfield track is closing on May 14th. Upon it's closing
there are close to 1000 greyhounds who will need to be placed. That's a lot of
greyhounds. The important thing, though, is that it is not true that any
greyhounds left at the track after 5/14 will be euthanized. Currently everyone
involved with greyhounds - trainers, owners, adoption groups, etc. are all
trying hard to work together to find places for the greyhounds. Adoption groups
from across the country are going to take dogs. There will be hauls (with
professional greyhound haulers) getting the greyhounds to the groups. Greyhounds
that are left at the track after 5/14 will be cared for until they can be moved
out. The details of how that is going to happen re: care and cost is still be
worked out, and it's a very important piece of the whole puzzle. The situation
and how it will be handled is still unfolding as offers of help and assistance
come in. Then, for people who wish to make a donation to help the Plainfield
greyhounds, I am suggesting that they make a contribution to their local
greyhound adoption group, stating that it is to be used for the
Plainfield greyhounds. Many of the adoption groups will be offering to take in
greyhounds from Plainfield and a person wanting to donate can contact their
local adoption group and confirm that they are helping the Plainfield dogs and
then make their donation. The adoption groups will assume a financial burden
for the dogs with feeding and vet care and general care until they get placed
and this is a very good way to help these dogs. Greyhound Friends will be taking
in some of the Plainfield dogs and we will accept donations for the care they
get from us. In Massachusetts, there is also Greyhound Pets of
America/Middleboro, located in Middleboro, MA and Greyhound Rescue of New
England, located in Mendon, MA. I'm sure both of those groups will be helping
the Plainfield greyhounds, too. If people want other groups to possibly donate
to, they can find a complete by state listing at the website of the Greyhound
Project - www.adopt-a-greyhound.org. Other groups (their info can be found on
the Greyhound Project website) that I am aware of that are committed to helping
the Plainfield greyhounds are:
