MHS Joins 'The Committee to Restore the Dove Shooting Ban'
|
After 99 years of protection in Michigan, mourning doves were placed on our
State Game List as House Bill 5029 was signed into law this past June. In
response, The Committee to Restore the Dove Shooting Ban
was created and immediately began the task of gathering the 158,000
signatures needed to put a referendum on the General Election Ballot in
November 2006. If passed, this would repeal our state's new dove hunting
law. The Committee has until April 1, 2005 to gather the required signatures
and plans to collect many thousand more to ensure qualification for a place
on the ballot. The Michigan Humane Society Board of Directors voted unanimously to become a Charter Member Organization on The Committee to help lead the statewide voter referendum petition drive. In addition, the MHS will soon offer the opportunity to sign the petition at our locations in Detroit, Rochester Hills and Westland as well as our administrative office in Southfield. How you can help now: To sign or circulate petitions to put this repeal on the 2006 ballot, contact The Committee to Restore the Dove Shooting Ban at (517) 321-DOVE. Donations o help restore the dove hunting ban can also be made directly through the Committee office. (Please note: The Michigan Humane Society is not able to accept Committee support donations directly.) For more information, visit http://www.stopshootingdoves.org/. Michigan Humane Society volunteers will also be needed to circulate petitions. If you are interested, please call 1-866-MHUMANE. Additional details will be provided in future e-news updates. |
Animal Welfare Rally |
On Tuesday, September 28, in partnership with several other animal organizations from across the state, the Michigan Humane Society will host a first-ever Animal Welfare Rally on the steps of the State Capitol Building in Lansing from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.! This historic event will allow humane organizations, rescue groups, animal control officers, members of the veterinary community and others concerned about animal welfare the opportunity to gather and celebrate our many years of service to the animals of our state. Additional activities will include tours of the Capitol Building and chances to meet with your legislators, both before and after the rally. As a supporter of animal welfare, we invite you and others you know who might be interested to join in this not-to-be-missed event.
