Dear animal friends:
I have pursuaded Michigan Representative Alexander Lipsey to introduce a bill in Michigan to allow K-12 students the right to do an alternative to dissection in the classroom. Many other states now have student choice dissection policies.
Right now, the bill has been referred to the education committee. If it passes through committee, it will go to a vote of all house members. This will be a long effort. If this bill is to pass, we need great responses in support of the bill. So as a personal favor to me and the animals, please take a few minutes to sit down and write a few letters.
Students’ beliefs should be respected. If they morally object to dissection, they should not be punished or forced to act against their beliefs. All dissection teaches is disrespect for life. Biology, however, is supposed to teach respect for life. Alternatives to cutting animals have been proven to be just as educational. In fact, studies have shown students who are tested on the subject matter score just as well or even better than students who dissected. For more information on how dissection is cruel, bad for the environment, and alternatives available, please go to www.hsus.org/ace/11368.
I don’t have money to spend on postage to keep everyone updated. So, if you are interested in the issue, please e-mail me at william.mcmullin@wmich.edu if you want me to keep you updated on the bill.
Thank you all so much for your help. More details are attached in Word format.
Sincerely,
William P. McMullin
