Pets, Shelters and Research

Jackson County – Tonight, the Jackson County Board of Commissioners is voting on a resolution to ban Jackson County Animal Control from selling pets to research dealers.  We are asking the commission to ban the sale of pets to any research dealer or research institution.  The vote is expected to be very close so if you live in Jackson County, please attend the meeting so your voice will be heard.  To email the Commissioners use this link:  www.jethrosplace.com/jacksoncounty/htm.

Michigan Farm Bureau

The Michigan Farm Bureau is working to keep pets flowing to research dealers and institutions.  Farm Bureau representatives have endorsed the sale of shelter pets to research during Jackson County Commission hearings and also promote the policy on their website:  Michigan Farm Bureau Website re: sale of pets to research

How you can help - if you are insured by Farmers Insurance, cancel your policy and let the company know why.  If you are a member of Michigan Farm Bureau, speak out and let their lobbyist know that pets are not research subjects.  To email Michigan Farm Bureau click here.

Fur

PETA released a video of an undercover investigation of a Michigan Fur Farm.  PETA also called upon the Michigan Dept of Agriculture to draft regulations to guarantee humane treatment of animals on fur farms.  As usual, our state government’s response has been less than enthusiastic.  Free Press Article:  http://www.freep.com/news/mich/peta18e_20040818.htm
