Hot Weather Safety

While summer temperatures in Michigan this year have been relatively mild, they can still pose a serious danger to your pets. The Michigan Humane Society offers pet owners the following hot weather safety tips:

  • Never leave a pet alone inside a vehicle. On an 85 degree day, even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked car can reach 120 degrees within a matter of minutes, leaving your pet susceptible to heatstroke and even death.
  • Bring pets inside. If animals must be left outdoors for any length of time, adequate shade and a supply of fresh, cool water is essential. However, when temperatures and humidity soar, even these precautions may not be enough. To report an animal left outdoors without proper provisions, call your local animal control or police, or call the Michigan Humane Society Cruelty Hotline at (313) 872-3401.

  • If your pet is experiencing rapid panting and lethargy and has been subjected to extreme temperatures, he may be suffering from heat exhaustion. Immerse the pet in cold water and contact your veterinarian immediately.

  • Limit strenuous exercise such as jogging or taking long walks to the early morning or evening hours. Make sure your pet has access to fresh, cool water before, during and after this activity.

  • Keep your pet in a safe area during thunderstorms or other severe weather. The noise and lights could cause a frightened pet to jump a fence or bolt out a door or fence and become lost.

  • Make sure your pet wears a collar and ID tag at all times. A form of permanent identification such as a microchip implant is also recommended.

Is Your Dog Too Old to Learn?

"Never," says Beth Chamberlain of the Michigan Humane Society's Pet Education Center (PEC). In fact, the PEC, the MHS’ behavior and training department, has an obedience class designed specifically for dogs over one year old and has had canine students up to age 13. Entitled Manners for Life, the "older dog" class teaches dogs to: sit politely for visitors rather than jump up for attention, come when called, sit and lie down when asked, leave items on the floor alone, walk nicely on a leash, and more. PEC group classes are fun for both humans and their dogs and are an excellent way to improve your relationship with your dog. All PEC training classes use only humane training methods.

Manners for Life classes are offered in Rochester Hills, Oak Park and Westland and are for all dogs over one year of age who are comfortable around people and other dogs.
The cost is $150 for a seven-week class, and there is a 20% discount offered for all dogs adopted from any humane or rescue organization.

For more information or a class schedule, click here or call (248) 650-1059, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We look forward to seeing you!
