Executive Director

Human Society of Huron Valley

Reports To: The Executive Director reports to the Humane Society of Huron
Valley’s Board of Directors.

Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan

Type: Full Time - Experienced

Organizational Overview:

The Executive Director of the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is the organization’s leading
professional employee and the only employee directly accountable to the Board of Directors. During
the next five years, HSHV intends to modernize its facilities to provide the animals under its care with a
more humane environment and thereby increase adoptions. The organization also intends to play a
new, more visible role in educating the public about animal welfare. To do this, the HSHV will need to
increase fund raising efforts and the operating budget. A strong Executive Director with demonstrable
skill in organizational development, financial management, public relations, fund raising and personnel
management is needed.

Position Summary:

The Executive Director must take a strong leadership role in developing and bringing new ideas to the
organization. The Executive Director should encourage and support the development of ideas and
systems by staff through effective delegation and mentoring. The Executive Director must also
possess a strong degree of business acumen in creating and operating HSHV’s programs within the
confines of the budget.

Duties & Responsibilities:

In a supervisory role, the Executive Director will oversee the following:

1.Shelter operations, including definition and development of the Operations Director position;
2.Veterinary clinic operations;
3.Hiring, evaluation and performance of administrative staff;
4.Rescue and cruelty investigations;
5.Purchasing and building maintenance;
6.Recruitment, training and retention of volunteers;
7.Development and management of annual budget;
8.Contract negotiations with municipalities and vendors.



In a leadership role, the Executive Director will:

1.Take a strong leadership role in developing and bringing new ideas to the HSHV;
2.Encourage and support the development of ideas and systems by staff through effective
delegation and mentoring;
3.Possess a strong degree of business acumen in creating and operating HSHV’s programs
within the confines of the budget.



Duties & Responsibilities, con’t.:

As HSHV’s internal and external spokesperson, the Executive Director must be able to:

1.Convey the organization’s vision to staff and public
2.Apprise the Board in a timely fashion of activities and issues affecting HSHV and the public’s
perception of the organization;
3.Develop and promulgate standard operating procedures within various departments;
4.Serve with the highest level of leadership to address complaints and concerns of staff and
public.



Qualifications:

The Campaign Director should possess:

1.At least five years of management experience
2.Thorough mastery of budget development and oversight process
3.Minimum of Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred
4.Strong oral and written communication skills
5.Ability to work flexible hours
6.Ability to develop and implement fund raising and public relations strategies
7.A solid track record of fund raising success and a strong interest in this area
8.Experience with major and corporate donors and familiarity with capital campaign procedures
and implementation is preferred.
9.Experience in non-profit organizations
10.Dedication to animal welfare issues desired



Salary:

The salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience, qualifications and salary
history. Targeted salary range $55,000 - $65,000.
