The Animal Protection Institute (API) is a national animal advocacy nonprofit
organization founded in 1968 and headquartered in Sacramento, CA. API advocates
for the protection of animals from cruelty and exploitation through
enforcement/legislative actions, litigation, investigations, advocacy campaigns,
public awareness, and direct action. API has a full-time staff of nineteen, five
field representatives, and an annual budget of $2.3 million. API also operates
the Texas Snow Monkey Sanctuary, a 186-acre facility for over 400 rescued
primates located in Dilley, Texas.
The following position is currently available at API's Sacramento Headquarters:
MANAGING EDITOR/WRITER
Responsibilities:
· Serve as Managing Editor of Animal Issues, a 32 page quarterly magazine.
Direct planning meetings and copy assignments. Develop two feature articles per
issue, primarily from outside writers. Edit all copy and write appropriate
articles.
· Write nine Bulletins (brief action alert newsletters) each year. Direct
planning meetings and collect factual information from program staff.
· Develop direct mail fund-raising materials with the Executive Director.
· Edit or write news releases, action alerts, fact sheets, annual report,
brochures, reports, comment letters, and other appropriate written
communications.
· Work with Creative Services Director to coordinate content with design and
production schedules for all publications.
· Keep abreast of current animal rights issues, API program activities, and
progress on API campaigns.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree or equivalent; advanced preparation in editing, writing, or
journalism.
· Experience in writing, editing, and publication management required.
Demonstrated writing skills are required.
· Background with a nonprofit advocacy organization and knowledge of animal
protection/rights issues is essential.
· Strong organization and planning skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
· Ability to work in a team environment.
