Wyntr FAQs

1. Do you have any puppies available?

There currently are no puppies available at Wyntr.

As always, we will also be happy to give referrals to other breeders. Or you can check out Kathy's Dog & Cardi Links page to see many other cardi breeder's websites.

2. When do you plan your next litter?

Beautiful did not produce any puppies in a previous attempt, so we hope to try for a litter this summer (2007) and if all goes well, we hope to have puppies available by late August to early September. Sire to be announced.

Read about Wyntr's Breeding and Puppy Placement Policies Here.

3. How much do Cardigan puppies cost?

Cardigan puppy prices tend to vary a lot by breeder and location, so it might be best to ask and politely explain your reason for wanting to know. Many breeders are reluctant to discuss prices until they are more sure about the potential home where they are placing a puppy. Also, many web servers don't like it when breeders advertise prices on their websites because that constitutes 'business' and therefore can be subject to additional fees.

4. When you DO have puppies, what colors will be available?

Here at Wyntr our goal is to breed quality in all colors, but our primary choice is tri-color (black and white with tan or brindle points), so tan or brindle pointed tri-colors are most likely to be available. In the case where one parent is not a tri, then almost any other color is possible, depending on the color of the non-tri parent.

The upcoming litter is expected to be all tri-colors with tan or brindle points since both parents are brindle point tris.

5. We only want a female, why is it so hard to find one?

There has recently been an increase in interest in the breed by puppy mill people ever since some cardis have been featured on TV and in advertising (Dharma & Greg, Animal Planet, Advantage commercials, Fidelity magazine ads, etc.). Many breeders are now being very careful about placing puppies, especially females. The breeder may also have plans to keep one or more puppies in a litter as show prospects and often these are females.

What many people also don't know is that cardis of either gender make wonderful companions. Before insisting on obtaining only a female, take time to meet some male cardis. You may be pleasantly surprised!

6. What health problems can we expect to encounter in cardigans?

Although cardigans are a relatively healthy breed, some health problems can occur. For a list of known and documented health problems in cardigans, click here.

7. We just want a pet and would be happy with an adult cardigan. Where can we find one?

You can contact Cardigan Rescue through the CWCCA website: http://cardigancorgis.com/ or directly through The Cardigan Welsh Corgi National Rescue Trust to see if they might be able to help you find an adult cardigan companion needing rescue in your area. Fortunately, cardigans are not in need of rescuing as often as more popular breeds, but it still happens.

The CWCCA website also has it's own FAQ page to answer questions about the breed in general.

8. We have seen pictures and done research on the breed, now how can we meet some cardigans in person?

The best place to meet cardigans in person would be to go to a local dogshow and talk to their breeders. To find a show near you, the AKC's show calendar and a number of dogshow superintendants are listed on Kathy's Dog & Cardi Links page on this website.

9. Cardigans are great! Should I breed mine?

Breeding ANY breed of dog is a serious, expensive, time consuming, often difficult and sometimes heartbreaking undertaking that can risk the life of your pet and should ONLY be done if you are truly committed to bettering the breed. Be prepared to do extensive pedigree research and expensive health testing before planning a litter. Breeding without doing these things is one of the major causes of serious problems in ANY breed. On top of regular vaccinations and parasite checks, it is essential to do health tests such as OFA evaluations of hips, elbows and patellas, CERF testing eyes, yearly thyroid evaluations, Von Willibrand's, brucellosis and mycoplasma tests, plus AKC now requires a DNA test for at least the sire. Be prepared to spend more money for a C-section surgery if your bitch has trouble whelping and in the worse case scenario, you may have to hand-raise the litter or find a foster mother if your girl does not survive the surgery (it CAN happen!). Then there are the expenses for first vaccines, worming and additional health screening for an average litter of six to as many as thirteen puppies, plus more costs for needed items like food, toys, puppy pen, dog crates, etc., etc...

Cardigans aren't a breed for everyone, so it can often be hard to find the right homes. Be prepared to keep puppies that aren't placed for up to six months or even for the rest of their life.

Please remember to NEVER buy a cardigan (or any puppy) from a pet store or from a breeder who isn't informed about cardigan needs and health issues. Petstore and backyard bred puppies are often only produced for one reason - making money. To learn more about the puppy mill industry and why you shouldn't buy puppies from petstores, check out http://nopuppymills.com/

10. Do all of your dogs really live together and how did you get them to sit still for those group pictures?

Yes, the entire cardigan crew here at Wyntr are indoor household companions who all get along well with each other. Getting good photos was a combination of patience, planning, many rolls of film (or repeat attempts with the digital) and dumb luck!

Remember! Think before you purchase. A puppy is a canine companion for a lifetime!
