Quick

After gaining his herding instinct certificate, I had the opportunity to take Quick to one of Cappy Pruett's herding seminars at a very nice farm and Australian Cattle Dog/GSD kennel near my home. These are some sequences taken from what was video taped that day.

Quick fetching sheep

Quick performs a very amatuer attempt at fetching the sheep back to the handler. He makes the novice mistake of going too fast and charging straight at them on the outrun. However, he then corrects himself to neatly head off one sheep who tries to split off on it's own. He returns to circle back where he balances himself naturally on the outside of the group with a little guidance. Not bad for only his second time on sheep!

Quick turn

In this sequence, Quick demonstrates the benefit of the cardi's unique front and long tail by easily making a sharp turn within his own body length. It's hard to see here, but in the first three frames his rear feet are not on the ground. He is using his out-turned front as both brake and lever as he swings his tail in counter-balance to bring his body around while he tucks his well-angulated rear for his launch in the new direction. The speed at which this is accomplished is shown by how little Cappy and the sheep in the background are moving in response.
