TORNADO # 2

Just after midnight on Friday the 10th of August 1979 the second tornado to hit Crockery Township since W.W. 2 ripped a path of destruction as it sailed across from west to east. The storm uprooted trees and knocked out power lines in Grand Haven before crossing the River into Spring Lake Township and on into Crockery. Major damage was done on M 104 between 136th avenue and 120th street . At this point the storm crossed over 104 and on into Nunica where its path took it down Michigan street which received damage from falling limbs and down power and telephone lines . It passed to the east across Polkton township and on to Kent County before dissipating. Houses in the 136th area received severe damage to roof and yards. The Seventh Day Advents School lost its roof and had extensive damage to the walls. At first the Weather Bureau thought that the storm was the result of what they called a "down burst" where air is funneled down from the jet stream in a thunder storm, But a few days later after observing the damage they concluded that it was indeed a tornado. Most of the way across the township the storm traveled at tree top level which diminished the amount of damage.
