STAN SAYLOR was born November 12, 1942 in Bannister MI. At age 12, he started taking accordion lessons and in less than 2 years had progressed on the accordion to the point where he began teaching the instrument to others. His teaching career has now spanned over 40 years and he currently has over 30 students from mid-Michigan who take private lessons from him.
In 1958, at age 15, Stan joined a five-member polka band specializing in Bohemian music. It was not uncommon for him to rehearse for six to eight hours after school in addition to his homework and other responsibilities to learn the Czech music.
After high school, Stan worked for 8 years at Melling Forge Company in Lansing MI becoming a journeyman die sinker. He spent 6 years in the Army National Guard as a Specialist Four radio mechanic, during which he saw action helping to restore order during the 1968 riots in Detroit. He now has his own electronic repair business, servicing TV's, VCR's and satellite systems.
In 1965, Stan married Linda Baker. They have a daughter, Marie, who is a school teacher and a son, Stan Jr., who is a doctor of internal medicine and pediatrics.
CZECH SOUNDS OF STAN SAYLOR is Stan's first recording. Although he has performed styles ranging from Bohemian to Slovenian to German to even Gospel music, Stan's favorite is Czech. On this recording are 18 songs including well-known favorites Clover by the Water and E Flat, A Flat. Also included are several beautiful orchestral Czech polkas and waltzes. Part of Stan's heritage traces to 19th century Hungary, which is the setting for Evening at the Village Green featuring a gypsy violin. You can also hear a Bohemian oom-pah tuba on Long Time and even a Spanish flavor in You Promised Me. Stan currently has a six-member band available for public performances and is also a strolling accordionist for the Bavarian Inn Restaurant in Frankenmuth MI.
